U.S. Track and Field Skips World U20 Championships in Lima, Peru”.

USATF Rejects World U20s Due to Travel Advisories and Competitiveness Concerns

The U.S.A Track and Field organization has announced that it will not be participating in the upcoming World U20 Championships in Lima, Peru, scheduled for August 26-31. The reasons cited for this decision include travel advisories and concerns about competitive readiness, as well as the timing of the event which poses a challenge for many high school and college athletes who have already returned to school or campuses for the upcoming academic year.

Despite the disappointment, the U.S. has a history of being a dominant force in World U20 Championships, leading the medal count nine times out of the last 15 meets since 1994. However, due to safety advisories and concerns surrounding COVID-19, the country opted out of the event in Nigeria three years ago. Last year, instead of participating in World U20 Championships, the U.S participated in Pan American U20 Championships in Puerto Rico.
