Tyreek Hill’s Contract Renewal: A Look at Inflation and Fairness in the NFL

Tyreek Hill’s contract is not holding up well

Tyreek Hill signed a contract two years ago that made him the highest-paid receiver in football with an average of $30 million per year. However, there are issues with this contract. First, the reported average is inflated, with the final year’s compensation greatly boosting the value. Without this, Hill’s actual three-year extension is valued at $75 million, making the real new-money average $25 million.

Secondly, recent deals have been made with players like Amon-Ra St. Brown, A.J. Brown, and Nico Collins that have higher real new-money averages. This means that Hill currently only receives $19.765 million in cash this year, which could lead to him seeking a renegotiation despite being signed for three more years.

Hill’s recent comments about wanting to play in Miami forever may be more about wanting to be paid fairly. As other receivers sign lucrative contracts, Hill may demand a pay increase, especially if players like Justin Jefferson or Ja’Marr Chase secure higher deals. At a time when the Dolphins are focused on extending Tua Tagovailoa’s contract, they should also consider ensuring their highest-paid player is content. If not, there may be agitation from Hill for a new deal as was seen when Davante Adams secured a significant contract prompting Hill’s desire for an upgrade.

It is important for the Dolphins to carefully review their options and ensure that they are offering fair compensation to all their players including Tyreek Hill who is one of their top performers on the field and off it as well.
