Two Recoveries from West Nile Virus in Clark County Spur Health Officials to Encourage Mosquito Prevention Measures

Health officials report cases of West Nile virus in Clark County

Two individuals in Clark County have successfully recovered from West Nile virus, health officials have announced. One of the cases involved a man in his 60s with the non-neuroinvasive form of the virus, while the other involved a man in his 70s with the neuroinvasive form. Despite these recoveries, health officials are still urging residents to take precautions against mosquito-borne illnesses.

The Southern Nevada Health District has reported the highest level of mosquito activity so far this season, with over 200 mosquito pools testing positive for West Nile virus. In addition to this, additional pools have tested positive for St. Louis encephalitis virus.

To protect themselves from these diseases, health officials have offered several tips to Clark County residents. These include eliminating standing water around homes, as mosquitoes breed in small containers collecting water. Insect repellent should also be used, as well as long sleeves and pants when outdoors. Residents are encouraged to report any areas of standing water or unusual mosquito activity to the Health District’s surveillance program.

By following these precautions, individuals can help reduce their risk of contracting mosquito-borne illnesses in the area.
