In Germany, a Turkish physicist named Professor Fatih Ömer İlday from Bilkent University in Ankara has been honored with the esteemed Alexander von Humboldt Professorship award. This prize is given to attract top international researchers to Germany, and İlday was recognized for his work in fast laser technology.
Professor İlday’s research focuses on developing ultra-fast lasers with applications in various fields, including medicine. He received a 5 million euro award to fund his research unit at Ruhr-Universität Bochum for the next five years. During this time, he will continue his work on “laser matter interactions.”
After completing his Ph.D in physics at Cornell University in 2003, İlday worked as a research scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before becoming a professor at Bilkent University in 2006. He has held a joint professorship in physics and electrical and electronics engineering since 2014, leading the Ultrafast Optics and Lasers Laboratory (UFOLAB).
Professor İlday is also a distinguished member of prestigious scientific societies such as Academia Europaea, the Turkish Academy of Sciences, and both the Turkish and American Physical Societies.
