A small group of mega-wealthy supporters are becoming critical backers of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, with more than $50 million donated to his campaign against Democratic incumbent Joe Biden. As smaller donations decrease and some traditional Republican donors distance themselves, these super-rich benefactors are playing a vital role in keeping Trump’s campaign afloat.
According to a Reuters analysis of Federal Election Commission data, the top five major donors to Trump include heirs to wealthy families like the Mellon banking family. One such donor is an 81-year-old heir to the Mellon family fortune, who has contributed millions to pro-Trump Super PACs since 2020.
Another significant donor is Isaac “Ike” Perlmutter, former chairman of Marvel Entertainment, who, along with his wife, has given millions to Trump-aligned Super PACs. Linda McMahon, former head of the Small Business Administration in the Trump administration, is also among the top contributors to Trump’s campaign.
A hotel magnate from Nevada and a major donor to a controversial Scientology church are also among the top supporters of Trump’s campaign. These megadonors are providing crucial financial support to keep Trump’s election campaign afloat and becoming increasingly important as traditional sources of funding dwindle.
