Transforming Tax Collection through Digital Transformation: Egypt’s Success Story

Finance Minister aims to integrate informal economy and broaden tax base through efforts

The government is actively working to expand the tax base and increase revenues through digital transformation, automation, and electronic tax systems. Finance Minister Mohamed Maait has outlined the Tax Authority’s strategies to ensure effective tax collection by identifying within the tax community.

Recent field campaigns targeted 50,000 entities, resulting in a 66% compliance rate for income tax and 49% for VAT. This led to the collection of EGP 1.6 billion in tax dues, swiftly addressing tax evasion and improper withholding by businesses.

The implementation of electronic tax systems has provided accurate data on commercial transactions through over one billion electronic invoices. Electronic receipts and declarations have enhanced tax governance and facilitated the integration of the informal economy, leading to a 38% increase in tax revenue since the beginning of the fiscal year.
