Technology has had a significant impact on the construction and operation of courts in China, as highlighted in a recent report issued by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences’ Institute of Law. The report, which focuses on the Informatization Development of Chinese courts, emphasizes the role of information and digital technologies such as artificial intelligence, 5G, big data, and blockchain in improving judicial processes.
One example provided in the report is the Jiangsu High People’s Court, which has implemented an online system for judicial auctions and established a platform for sharing resources and case information among courts in the Yangtze River Delta. Additionally, courts across the country have introduced online legal services for case filing, pretrial mediation, and online payments to help litigants and lawyers save time and costs.
By the end of last year, over 100,000 institutes and 410,000 mediators had joined an online platform established by the Supreme People’s Court, aiding in the successful resolution of 12.04 million civil and administrative disputes through mediation. Furthermore, more than 77 percent of practicing lawyers nationwide have registered on another online platform for managing case-related affairs and interacting with judges.
The report stresses the importance of embracing technological developments and calls for further integration of technology in the judicial system to meet the growing legal demands of the population and enhance overall judicial capability in China’s courts.
