Trailblazers in Sports: Vice President Kamala Harris Celebrates Women’s History Month with Athletic Pioneers

Kamala Harris, Vice President, celebrates women’s sports in Andscape.

At her Washington residence, Vice President Kamala Harris recently hosted a Women’s History Month celebration in collaboration with the Women’s Sports Foundation, founded by tennis legend Billie Jean King. The event brought together an array of women to honor the theme of trailblazing females in sports.

The reception, which boasted a guest list of over 100 women, featured accomplished athletes and influential figures from the world of sports. Among the attendees were Nikki Fargas, president of the Las Vegas Aces, Renee Montgomery, retired WNBA player and part-owner of the Atlanta Dream, and Lisa Leslie, a three-time WNBA MVP and four-time Olympic gold medalist. These women all commended the trailblazers who had paved their way in sports.

Vice President Harris emphasized the importance of daily work done by these women to benefit people of all genders during her speech at the event. The atmosphere at her residence was transformed into a space for celebration, reflection, and recognition of women’s crucial role in shaping sports history.

Harris also highlighted the significance of providing equal access to opportunities in sports as a means to develop strong leaders and build a more resilient nation. She shared advice from her mother about being first and setting an example for others while emphasizing self-empowerment and standing up for oneself.

As part of her efforts to support female athletes, Harris has made surprise visits to young female athletes across the country. In January, she visited coach Dawn Staley and the University of South Carolina women’s basketball team before surprising St. Paul Central High School softball team with an invitation to attend the Women’s History Month reception held at her residence earlier this month.
