WWII-era Spitfire fighter crash in England results in the death of pilot

On Saturday, a tragic incident occurred near RAF Coningsby air base in eastern England, resulting in the death of a pilot in a World War II-era Spitfire fighter plane crash. The U.K. defense ministry confirmed the sad news, and Group Captain Robbie Lees, commander of the display air wing, expressed his deep sorrow over the loss of Squadron Leader Mark Long, who had been a Typhoon pilot at RAF Coningsby and was also a pilot with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

Mark was remembered as a great friend, colleague, and passionate aviator who will be deeply missed. RAF Coningsby is home to both modern fighter jets and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, which consists of wartime fighter and bomber aircraft used in air shows and memorial displays. The Royal Air Force has temporarily grounded the Memorial Flight while an investigation into the crash takes place.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the crash in Coningsby, where it was confirmed that the aircraft had only one occupant, the pilot, who unfortunately lost their life. The crash occurred shortly before aircraft were set to take part in events commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

The Spitfire played a significant role in defending the U.K. during World War II and remains an iconic symbol of the Battle of Britain. Prime Minister Winston Churchill famously praised the bravery of Battle of Britain airmen, acknowledging their crucial role in the conflict. Today, only a few dozen airworthy Spitfires remain, with six being part of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

The cause of the crash is still unknown at this time, but investigations are ongoing to determine what led to this tragic event near RAF Coningsby air base.
