Tragic Loss at Diergaarde Blijdorp Zoo: Five Sea Turtles Die Due to High Water Temperatures

Warmer water in shelter causes five endangered turtles to die in the Netherlands

In Rotterdam, five turtles from the Blijdorp Zoo passed away due to high water temperatures. These turtles were originally found on various beaches in the Netherlands last winter and were being cared for at the zoo. In total, eight turtles were brought to Diergaarde Blijdorp since last winter, with one dying prematurely due to severe weakness. The latest five deaths were a result of the water in their tank becoming too warm due to a technical issue.

The loss of these turtles is a sad event for the zoo, which was caring for them with the intention of eventually releasing them back into the wild. Two of the original eight turtles are still alive, and the zoo is now focusing on safely releasing these remaining animals. A spokesperson for Diergaarde Blijdorp expressed their condolences over this tragic occurrence.

Meanwhile, scientists continue to puzzle over the increasing number of sea turtles ending up on the beaches of the Low Countries. While some believe it may be related to climate change, others are unsure if it’s just a coincidence. Only time will tell whether this phenomenon continues in the future.
