Tragic Accident: The Voice France Winner Shot while Handling Gun in His Home

Contestant from French edition of The Voice 2014 injured by gunshot

In the early hours of Monday morning, Kendji Girac, a 27-year-old singer who won the French edition of ‘The Voice 2014’, was shot while handling a Colt 45 that he had purchased at a flea market. The police received a call at 5:30 am reporting the incident and by the time officers arrived, Girac had already been taken to Haut-Leveque hospital in Pessac, south-west of Gironde’s capital.

An investigation has been initiated into the shooting but no further information is available at this time from the Mont-de-Marsan Prosecutor’s Office. The incident took place at a nomadic camp in Biscarrosse on departmental road D652 towards Parentis-en-Born. Originally from Perigueux, Kendji Maille comes from a family of Catalan gypsy descent and rose to fame unexpectedly when his uncle posted a video of him covering Gims’ hit song “Bella” on the guitar in August 2013. He later won The Voice in 2014 and has achieved great success, selling millions of records and garnering hundreds of millions of views on YouTube with hits such as “Color Gitano” and “Andalouse”.
