In Mainz, chaos reigned on Monday evening as three parking garages along the Rhine were unexpectedly closed, leading to a traffic jam. The closure was prompted by the St. John’s Night Festival, which culminated in a fireworks display. To ensure the safety of pedestrians, the city ordered the shutdown of the parking garages between Fischtorplatz and Kaisertor from 9:30 p.m. on Monday until 1 a.m. on Tuesday.
Those who had parked their vehicles before the closure found themselves trapped inside as their exit was blocked by flatbed trucks. Despite efforts to communicate the closure through small A4 printouts, many festival attendees were left frustrated and stranded in the garages.
