Toyoda Gosei’s Revolutionary High Power UV-C LEDs: A Game-Changer in Disinfection

Toyoda Gosei Creates UV-C LED with Exceptional Light Output

Toyoda Gosei Co., Ltd. has recently developed high power deep ultraviolet (UV-C) LEDs that are among the most powerful in the world. These LEDs are effective in disinfection as they can destroy viral and bacterial DNA structures and prevent their replication. Compared to traditional mercury lamps used for disinfection, UV-C LEDs are more environmentally friendly, mercury-free, more compact, and have a longer lifespan. As a result, they have been widely used in air and surface disinfection devices during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Despite their advantages, UV-C LEDs have been limited in terms of light output compared to lighting LEDs. However, Toyoda Gosei has used its expertise in crystallization and design to successfully develop UV-C LEDs that achieve a light output level of 200 milliwatts with a single chip when powered by a 350 milliampere current. The improvements in LED structure and composition have quadrupled the amount of light that can be extracted, resulting in significantly enhanced performance, including a disinfection capability three times higher than before.

Toyoda Gosei is set to begin sample sales internationally of its high power UV-C LEDs in April 2024, with plans to expand to other regions in the future. These LEDs have the potential to become a viable alternative to mercury lamps, particularly in water purification plants and other situations where high disinfection performance is necessary. By promoting the wider use of UV-C LEDs for disinfecting water, air, and surfaces, Toyoda Gosei aims to contribute to a more hygienic and safer living environment.
