Uruguayan soccer player Rodrigo Bentancur has issued an apology to Tottenham captain Son Heung-min after making a racial slur on television. In an appearance on the Canal 10 show Por La Camiseta, Bentancur made a comment that insinuated that all members of Son’s family looked the same. The clip of his remarks quickly circulated on social media, leading to backlash.
In response to the controversy, Bentancur took to Instagram to publicly apologize to Son. He referred to him as “Sonny brother” and expressed his deep regret for the hurtful joke. He reassured Son that he respects and values their relationship, emphasizing his love and admiration for his team-mate.
As of now, Son has not publicly responded to Bentancur’s apology. The two players have been colleagues since Bentancur joined Tottenham from Juventus earlier this year. Meanwhile, Bentancur is focused on his upcoming participation in the Copa America tournament in the United States, scheduled to begin on 20 June.
