Total Solar Eclipse of 2024: A Once-in-a-Lifetime View from North America to Mexico and Beyond

NASA Science: Total Eclipse of 2024

A total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024, began over the South Pacific Ocean before crossing North America. It traveled through several states in continental North America, including Mexico, the United States, and Canada. The first location in continental North America to experience totality was Mexico’s Pacific coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT.

The eclipse then entered the United States through Texas and passed through states such as Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. It finally exited continental North America on the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland, Canada at 5:16 p.m. NDT. The event was a spectacular sight for those who witnessed it as the moon briefly blocked out the sun and cast a shadow over the land. The next total solar eclipse of this magnitude is not expected to occur in North America for several years.
