Tina Freiburger: Championing Community Impact and Social Justice

Freiburger recognized as part of Business Journal’s Women of Influence

Tina Freiburger, Dean of the College of Community Engagement and Professions at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, has been recognized as one of the winners of the Milwaukee Business Journal’s 2024 Women of Influence. This prestigious list highlights influential business and community leaders in southeastern Wisconsin who are making a positive impact on the Milwaukee area.

Freiburger is dedicated to making a difference in the community through her work. The College of Community Engagement and Professions was established in 2023 and encompasses three schools: the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare, the School of Education, and the School of Information Studies. Prior to becoming dean of the combined schools, Freiburger served as dean of the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare. She has been a part of UWM since 2007.

Freiburger’s research focuses on gender and racial disparities in criminal justice decision-making. She has collaborated with local criminal justice agencies on various studies and program evaluations, addressing issues such as juvenile offending, mental health needs of youth, police and juvenile relations, work programs for probationers and parolees, and disparities in prosecutorial and judicial decision-making.

With numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals under her belt, millions in external grants secured, authorship or editorship of four books, Freiburger is an established leader in her field. She also serves on editorial boards for academic journals such as Youth Violence and Juvenile Justice, Race and Justice: An International Journal, and Journal of Crime and Justice.
