Tiktok under Fire: EU Commission Launches Official Investigation over Reward Program for Teen Users

The EU Commission has put Tiktok under the spotlight once again, this time due to concerns raised about its reward program in the Tiktok Lite app. Users aged 18 and above can earn points by completing tasks such as watching videos, liking content, or following other users. These points can be exchanged for rewards like Amazon discount coupons or Tiktok virtual coins.

However, the Commission has expressed worries about the impact of the reward program on users’ mental health. As a result, Tiktok has voluntarily suspended the program to address these concerns. Failure to comply with the Commission’s request led to an official investigation under the Digital Services Act.

Tiktok is now facing scrutiny for its user protection and platform transparency under this act, which requires large online platforms to address social risks such as illegal content and online disinformation. With potential fines for violations, it is crucial that Tiktok navigates this regulatory landscape responsibly.

The concerns raised by the EU Commission underscore the importance of responsible platform management in the digital age. It is crucial that social media companies prioritize user protection while still providing engaging content and incentives for their users.
