TikTok Banned in the US: Legal Challenge and Devastating Impact on Users

Joe Biden Signs Law Requiring TikTok to Sell App or Face US Ban

On Tuesday night, the United States Senate approved a law that bans TikTok in the country. The following day, President Joe Biden signed the bill into law for immediate implementation. This law gives ByteDance 270 days to find an investor from a non-foreign adversary country to sell the company. If ByteDance fails to do so, TikTok will be blocked in the US.

TikTok has stated that they will challenge the law in court, calling it unconstitutional and stating that they believe they have the facts and the law on their side. The platform warned that a potential ban would have a devastating impact on 7 million companies in the US and 170 million Americans who use the app.

The arguments for blocking TikTok in the US stem from concerns that China could access user data through ByteDance and manipulate content on the app to influence public opinion. The law was passed as part of a set of measures that included military aid for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, among others, and received support with 79 votes in favor and 18 against.
