Through Their Lens: Telling Tales of Struggle and Hope through Photography Exhibit

Photo competition shines light on mental health awareness

A photography contest has culminated in a powerful exhibit at the Florida Museum of Photographic Art in Ybor City. Titled “Through Their Lens – A Journey of Self Exploration,” the exhibit showcases the work of middle and high school students who are raising awareness about mental health through their art. These young photographers are using their creativity to shine a light on important issues and spark conversations about mental well-being.

The contest is dedicated to teen Jacob Kamis, who tragically took his own life after struggling with severe depression. Jacob’s parents are committed to honoring his memory by promoting mental health awareness. They believe that by showcasing the artwork of young photographers, they can inspire others to express their emotions through art and seek help when needed.

Jacob Kamis’ passion for photography is evident in his work, which is also displayed at the museum alongside the contest winners. His dedication to the art form serves as an inspiration to others to pursue their creative interests and use them as a means of self-expression. Jacob’s family hopes that the exhibit will spark important conversations about mental health and encourage young people to prioritize their emotional well-being.

The “Through Their Lens – A Journey of Self Exploration” exhibit will be open to the public until mid-June. By sharing their stories and artwork, these young photographers are making a significant impact in raising awareness about mental health and promoting self-expression as a means of healing and growth.
