Three Local High School Students Win Awards at International Science and Engineering Fair for Groundbreaking Research

LISD Students Recognized for Outstanding Research at State and International Science and Engineering Fairs

Maya Reddy from Leander High School was awarded a Third Award in the Translational Medical Science category at the International Science and Engineering Fair. Inspired by her loved one’s battle with Alzheimer’s disease, Maya conducted experiments to show how artificial DNA sequences could be used to treat over 20 neurodegenerative disorders characterized by tau protein abnormalities. For her achievement at ISEF, Maya received a $1,000 prize and a scholarship to UT Dallas.

Raina Desai from Vista Ridge High School also competed at ISEF with a project in Cellular and Molecular Biology. Her project aimed to understand how a combination of alpha-lipoic acid and vitamin D3 affected the movement of Caenorhabditis Elegans carrying a gene mutation that models familial ALS. At the Texas Science and Engineering Fair, Medha Pullura placed third in Biochemistry with her project focused on the effects of methamphetamine and similar stimulants on contracting symptoms of Cerebral Cavernous Malformation. Samuel Li from Vandegrift High School also placed third at the fair with his project on predicting seasonal Atlantic Hurricane activity using climatic patterns and machine-learning techniques in Earth and Environmental Sciences.
