Meta’s microblogging platform Threads has surpassed 175 million monthly active users, just one year after its launch in the United States and a few months after expanding to Europe. The platform, also known as Hilos, enables users to share ideas, opinions, and creativity through short text posts similar to its predecessor Twitter.
Initially launched in the U.S. and other countries with separate versions for iOS and Android devices, Threads later expanded to Europe, where it faced challenges related to privacy regulations. Upon release, the platform offered capabilities comparable to its competitors, including creating text posts, sharing links, photos, and videos up to five minutes long. Additional features like re-publishing posts, liking content, saving drafts, direct messaging were gradually introduced. Meta also rolled out a desktop application for Windows computers and trending topics to enhance the user experience.
The growth of Threads has been consistent since its launch with Meta announcing significant milestones in terms of user numbers. Despite reaching 175 million monthly active users, the platform aims to create a public space for communities on Instagram that may not have embraced other social networks. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has highlighted the steady growth of Threads underlining the platform’s success in reaching a diverse audience.
As Meta continues to expand the features and reach of Threads, its focus remains on providing a unique space for users to engage and share content. As the platform evolves and attracts more users it will be interesting to see how it differentiates itself from other microblogging networks and continues to grow its community.
