The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson in Derby: Teaching Children the Art of Swimming and Saving Lives

The world is coming together to raise awareness about the importance of teaching kids to swim through the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson. Rock River Rapids in Derby, Kansas is participating in this global initiative to set a world record and promote the message that swimming saves lives.

According to the WLSL, drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1-4 in the United States and the second leading cause for ages 5-14. Research from the American Academy of Pediatrics indicates that the risk of drowning can be reduced by 88% if children participate in formal swimming lessons between the ages of 1-4. This event is an opportunity to educate people about these statistics and encourage them to take action.

The event is free and open to the public, with registration starting at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 20, and the lesson beginning at 10 a.m. People of all ages are welcome to participate, but children aged 3 and under require an adult to be in the water with them. The event is taking place at Rock River Rapids, located at 801 E. Market St. in Derby.
