West Indies Dominates Afghanistan in T20 World Cup 2024, Secures Top Spot in Group C with 104-Run Victory

The West Indies made history in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, 2024, by setting a new record for the highest first innings total. In St. Lucia, the match was a thrilling spectacle as the West Indies showed aggressive intent from the start. Despite losing Brandon King early on, Johnson Charles and Nicholas Pooran launched a fierce attack on the Afghan bowlers.

Charles struggled at first but found his rhythm soon and hit boundaries regularly, while Pooran hit the ball out of the park with ease. The duo took advantage of Powerplay and amassed an astonishing 92 runs, breaking a new record for T20 World Cup history. When Charles was dismissed after scoring 43 runs, he left behind a solid foundation for his teammates.

Pooran and Hope focused on rotating their strike and playing cautiously against the spinners, adding 33 runs before Hope was dismissed for 25. Nicholas Pooran continued his aggressive batting display and reached a brilliant half-century, although his run rate slowed down slightly. Skipper Rovman Powell also contributed with a solid 26 runs to help the West Indies post an imposing total of 218.

Nicholas Pooran unleashed his full potential in the final over of batting, scoring 24 runs off Rashid Khan’s bowling and hitting eight massive sixes to leave Afghanistan struggling to contain him. Despite falling just three runs short of a century, Pooran’s innings helped set up an incredible lead that would be difficult for Afghanistan to overcome in their chase.
