The Unwavering Dedication of Dr. Maak: New NBAPA President Brings Expertise and Passion for Player Health and Well-Being

Travis Maak of University of Utah Health Appointed President of NBA’s Physicians Association for 2024-2025 term

Maak, a seasoned physician with extensive experience in sports medicine and orthopedic surgery, has been elected as the new president of the National Basketball Players Association (NBAPA). In his new role, he will work closely with the NBA league, NBAPA medical professionals, and other stakeholders to improve player performance and prioritize athletes’ health and well-being.

As NBAPA President, Maak will lead efforts to prevent injuries, develop treatment plans, and ensure NBA players receive top-notch medical care. He will also continue to care for the Utah Jazz as their orthopedic physician, a role he has held since U of U Health became their official health care partner in 2014.

Maak is among the NBAPA’s longest-serving physicians and has held various positions such as chairman of the research committee and serving on the executive committee. His commitment to advancing health care in professional basketball is unparalleled, as he takes on his new role as NBAPA President. Maak’s educational background includes graduating from Stanford University and Yale School of Medicine, where he completed his medical training. He did his orthopedic surgery residency and sports medicine fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, where he also served as an assistant team physician for the New York Giants.
