The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has brought to light the importance of mental health, with public health measures leading to increased feelings of anxiety and depression among individuals. Men have been disproportionately affected, with 36.8% reporting symptoms of depression and 33.8% experiencing anxiety during the pandemic. Despite traditional notions that men are less likely to discuss their mental health, more men are now seeking help and advice on how to maintain their well-being.
A study published in BMJ Global Health found that men ranked ‘How to maintain my mental health’ as one of the top COVID-19-related topics they wanted more information about. Patrick Alonso, PharmD, CPh, owner of Your Tampa Health Care Advocates and co-host of the Men’s Health Unscripted podcast, emphasized the importance of self-care for men in improving their mental health. Alonso recommended prioritizing self-care activities such as getting a massage or facial as ways to feel good and improve mental well-being.
In response to the challenges brought on by the pandemic, many men are taking steps to prioritize their mental health and well-being. By seeking help, practicing self-care, and prioritizing their mental health, men can improve their overall well-being during these challenging times.
