The Uncertain Future of Trey Lance on the Dallas Cowboys: A Battle for the Backup Role and a Possible Starting Role in 2025

Cowboys excited to watch Trey Lance in preseason

Trey Lance, the 2021 No. 3 overall pick acquired by the Cowboys from the 49ers in a fourth-round draft pick before the 2023 season, has yet to see much action on the field. Arriving late in Dallas, he missed out on practice reps and was inactive for all 17 games of the season. However, he now has a chance to compete with Cooper Rush for the backup role behind Dak Prescott during training camp and preseason.

Despite not having seen much of Lance on the field due to his late arrival to the team, Stephen Jones, executive vice president of the Cowboys, expressed excitement about his potential during rookie minicamp. He praised Lance’s work ethic and professionalism.

The Cowboys have decided not to exercise the fifth-year option on Lance’s contract, which means that Prescott, Rush, and Lance are all scheduled to become free agents in 2025. If a long-term agreement cannot be reached with Prescott, there is a possibility that Lance could take on the starting quarterback role for the Cowboys in 2025.

Heading into preseason, Lance has a lot at stake as he looks to showcase his skills and compete for a more prominent role on the team. In his limited playing time so far, he has shown promise and will be closely watched by Cowboys coaches and fans alike as he competes for a bigger role in the upcoming preseason games.
