The Trojans’ Search for Depth in Defensive Tackles: Bringing in Wyoming Transfer Gavin Meyer

The Trojans have bolstered their defensive tackle depth by adding Wyoming transfer Gavin Meyer. Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 285 pounds, the redshirt senior chose USC over schools like Cal, Wisconsin, and Illinois. Meyer gained a significant role on the defensive line in his last two seasons with the Cowboys after starting his career with limited playing time.

As USC entered spring camp, they were in need of defensive linemen. Defensive ends coach Shaun Nua highlighted Anthony Lucas as a potential candidate to play on the outside and help on the defensive tackle position when required. However, setbacks came when projected starting nose guard Isaiah Raikes transferred 13 days later and redshirt freshman Deijon Laffitte also departed.

With the departure of Raikes and Laffitte, USC will rely heavily on Meyer, along with incoming freshman Carlon Jones, to fill their defensive line room. Head coach Lincoln Riley, defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn, and defensive line coach Eric Henderson are actively seeking more defensive options leading up to fall camp. This depth is critical not only for game days but also for maintaining competitive practices throughout the season.

The Trojans are not alone in their search for more defensive options as many other college football teams are currently facing similar challenges.
