The Top Florida Sports Dynasties: From the Perfectly Imperfect Miami Dolphins to the Unstoppable University of Tampa Baseball Program

Tampa Spartans: Florida’s Premier College and Pro Sports Dynasty

The University of Tampa baseball program is a force to be reckoned with in the state of Florida. With a record of 52-8 and a ninth national title under their belt, they are considered the bay area’s resident sports dynasty. In the last 12 seasons, they have won four titles and in the last 19, they have six. This puts them in an elite group of sports teams that have achieved dynasty status.

Many college and professional sports teams in Florida have not reached this level of success, but the University of Tampa baseball program is an exception. A dynasty refers to a team that performs at an elite and/or championship level for a significant stretch. While high school programs may achieve this status, it is less common at the higher levels of sports. To highlight those teams that have achieved greatness over the years, we have compiled a list of Florida’s college and pro sports dynasties.

The Miami Dolphins had a dominant run in the 1970s, making three consecutive Super Bowls from 1971 to 1973 and winning the NFL’s only perfect season in 1972 with a record of 17-0. Coached by Don Shula, the Dolphins had a regular season record of 36-5-1 during this period, boasting a winning percentage of .857. Even in the years surrounding this three-year run, the team had double-digit winning seasons and playoff appearances.

The University of Miami baseball team also had a remarkable dynasty from 1978 to 2008, with multiple national championships and consistent success over the three-decade span. Their dominance on the college baseball scene solidified them as one of the state’s most successful sports programs.
