The Spectra Cube: A Revolutionary Tape Library for Cloud Environments

Spectra Logic’s 30,000TB Tower Harnesses 70-Year-Old Technology: Data Tape Still Thrives in an AI-driven World with Massive Storage System Utilizing Thousands of LTO-9 Tapes

Spectra Logic has unveiled its new tape library, the Spectra Cube, designed for use in cloud environments. This system is optimized for on-premise, hybrid cloud, and IaaS setups and can be deployed quickly, scaled dynamically, and serviced easily without the need for tools or downtime. The Spectra Cube library is managed by LumOS library management software, which allows for secure local and remote management and monitoring.

The tower is compatible with LTO-6, LTO-7, LTO-8, and LTO-9 technology, with support for LTO-10 planned for the future. Users can read tapes all the way back to LTO-4 with an LTO-6 tape drive. The Spectra Cube library features high tape cartridge exchange performance, a TeraPack Access Port for simple tape handling, and drive interfaces including Fibre Channel and SAS. It offers up to 30PB of native capacity and supports up to 16 partitions for shared or multi-tenant environments.

With its capacity-on-demand expansion model, users can enable additional tape slots and drives via software without downtime. This solution provides a more cost-effective storage option compared to public cloud options, offering savings of up to 50% for cold storage. Additionally, it provides better data control and protection against threats like ransomware.

The price of a fully configured Spectra Cube library ranges from under $60,000 to over $500,000 depending on configuration options such as number of tape drives
