The Risks and Rewards of Psilocybin Mushroom Use in Mental Health Treatment: A Case Study with a Warnings Label

FDA recalls mushroom products due to health concerns

In the humidified basement of a private home in Fairfield County, Connecticut, psilocybin mushrooms are being cultivated for use in treating mental health conditions. Research has shown promise that these magic mushrooms may promote neuroplasticity, which is a rewiring of the brain that can provide new insights into longstanding psychiatric problems. Despite being classified as a Schedule 1 substance and illegal at the federal level, some municipalities and states have decriminalized psilocybin use, with Oregon legalizing the adult use of mushrooms within “psilocybin service centers.”

However, not all mushroom products are safe. Recently, Prophet Premium Blends recalled their Diamond Shruumz-infused cones, chocolate bars, and gummies due to the presence of muscimol, a chemical found in mushrooms that can cause seizures, loss of consciousness, nausea, vomiting, abnormal heart rates, involuntary muscle contractions, and agitation. The recall includes all flavors and products of any date, with thirty-nine reported illnesses across 20 states related to consumption of these products. Consumers are advised to throw away any Diamond Shruumz product and contact Prophet Premium Blends with their order number to secure a refund.
