The New England Patriots have recently secured another key player by agreeing to a three-year contract extension with linebacker Jahlani Tavai, as reported by ESPN. The 27-year-old linebacker, originally drafted by the Detroit Lions in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft, had a standout season in 2023 while with the Patriots, recording 110 total tackles, five tackles for loss, four QB hits, one sack, and two interceptions.
Tavai was released from the Lions’ roster at the beginning of the 2021 regular season and joined the Patriots’ practice squad. He has since remained with the team and has become a valuable member of their defense. The new deal includes a base value of $15 million with the potential to increase to $21 million.
The Patriots have made a concerted effort this offseason to re-sign players who were approaching the end of their contracts. Tavai is the latest player to commit to a new deal, following in the footsteps of running back Rhamondre Stevenson, defensive tackle Christian Barmore, and center David Andrews. With Tavai’s signing, the Patriots continue to strengthen their defense and solidify their roster for future seasons.
