The PACT Act of 2022: A Game-Changer for VA Health Care in Indiana

Expansion of Federal Law Leads to Thousands of Hoosier Veterans Enrolling in VA Health Care

The PACT Act of 2022 brought a significant change to the accessibility of Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care for veterans in Indiana. This act led to an increase of over 37 percent in newly enrolled Hoosier veterans within just one year. The bill expanded direct access to VA health care for veterans who were exposed to toxic substances during their military service.

As a result, more than 7,141 additional Hoosier veterans are now enrolled in VA health care, surpassing the national average rate of increase. This positive impact on Indiana’s veterans is a testament to the importance of the PACT Act in providing easier access to much-needed care.

Both of Indiana’s U.S. senators supported the bill, with U.S. Sen. Todd Young (R-Ind.) emphasizing the need for oversight to prevent the VA from becoming overwhelmed by the increased demand for care. To address this concern, the VA nationally hired over 61,000 employees last year – their highest number ever – to ensure that they could provide adequate support and care to all those who need it.

Moving forward, it is crucial that we continue to monitor and evaluate the implementation of the PACT Act to ensure that it remains effective in expanding access to VA health care for veterans in Indiana and across the country. By doing so, we can help improve the well-being and quality of life for those who have served our nation and deserve our utmost support and gratitude.
