Mays, the Giants’ beloved ‘Say Hey Kid,’ passes away at 93

Willie Mays, the legendary “Say Hey Kid,” passed away at the age of 93. Known for his remarkable talent, relentless drive and infectious exuberance, Mays was one of baseball’s greatest and most cherished players. His family and the San Francisco Giants announced his passing, stating that he passed away peacefully in his sleep surrounded by loved ones.

At the time of his death, Mays was the oldest living Hall of Famer. He was renowned for his signature basket catch and his breathtaking dashes around the bases with his cap flying off. One of his most iconic moments was the over-the-shoulder catch he made in the 1954 World Series, which is still considered one of baseball’s most celebrated defensive feats.

During his illustrious 22-season career, most of which were spent with the New York/San Francisco Giants, Mays hit an impressive .302 batting average, slammed 660 home runs, accumulated 3,283 hits and scored over 2,000 runs. To top it all off, he earned 12 Gold Gloves and was named Rookie of the Year in 1951. He also won the MVP award twice and finished in the top ten for this prestigious award an astounding ten other times.
