The Great Twitter Name Debate: Twitter or X? A Look at the Emotional Attachment to Social Media Platforms

Twitter, or X? This question sparked a heated debate on social media after a parody account of Elon Musk proposed changing the platform’s name to X. The post received over 47 million views in just two days, with users passionately discussing their preference for the old name. A survey posted in the comments showed that 94.8% of users still refer to the platform as Twitter, while 5.2% call it X.

Many users expressed their loyalty to the old name, urging Musk to bring back the original symbol. Even influencer MrBeast highlighted the confusion around calling a post on social media a “tweet,” regardless of the platform, leading many to continue calling it Twitter. Even the president of the Argentine Chamber joined the debate with a humorous response. However, the Elon Musk parody account insisted that Twitter is dead, and users should refer to posting on the platform as “X.”

To resolve this ongoing dispute, TikToker JewelyBlue proposed “Twix” as a compromise. The debate may be semi-serious, but it showcases how emotionally attached people are to Twitter’s original name and how they hold onto nostalgia associated with it despite its rebranding to X.

The controversy surrounding Twitter’s new name has brought attention to how much people value brand recognition and loyalty to certain platforms. While some may argue that names can be changed without any consequences, others see them as an integral part of a company’s identity and reputation.

Ultimately, whether we call it Twitter or X remains a matter of personal preference and emotional attachment. But one thing is clear: social media platforms play an important role in shaping our daily lives and conversations, even when they spark debates about their names.
