The anticipation is palpable on Main Street in downtown Springfield as preparations for the World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast are well underway. On Friday, tables were set up at 10 a.m. and pancake batter was prepared at Mercy Medical Center, with three refrigerated trucks delivering the necessary ingredients.
Come Saturday morning, hundreds of people are expected to gather on Main Street to enjoy fresh pancakes together. The batter will be distributed on numerous griddles across the street, with free tickets distributed to 67,000 Hampden County school children to encourage a large crowd to attend.
The breakfast will cost $3 for adults and $1 for children, with bacon also on the menu prepared by the Hampden County Sheriff’s Department. However, traffic on Main Street will be impacted by road closures from State Street to Bridge Street starting at 4 a.m., so attendees may need to plan accordingly. Parking may be limited due to posted “No Parking” signs near the event area, but attendees can park for free at MGM Springfield or pay a $5 flat fee at the I-91 north and south garages.
