The Future of Sustainable Transport: Can Weibel’s Call for Pause Stop Climate Change?

Benedikt Weibel’s call for a pause on railway expansion has sparked controversy and prompted discussions about the future of sustainable transport. In 2023, at an event celebrating 50 years of the Swiss overall transport concept, Weibel presented the core ideas from his book on sustainable transport. He highlighted the underutilization of the current rail network and the long lead time for large expansion projects, which he believes are not effective enough in combating climate change.

Following a brainstorming session with like-minded individuals passionate about railways, Weibel initiated the “Prometheus” project with the goal of increasing the railway’s market share, improving train frequency and connectivity, and implementing changes quickly using existing resources. Despite positive initial reactions from various transport authorities, including the Federal Office of Transport and the SBB, radio silence has followed since the end of 2023.

Weibel clarifies that the goal is not to halt all expansion projects but to reassess them based on necessity and cost-effectiveness before proceeding. He points out the example of the Lausanne train station expansion, where costs have skyrocketed, completion is delayed, and operations are disrupted. Weibel emphasizes the need to maximize the current infrastructure’s potential before embarking on new large-scale projects, especially with the looming deadline for achieving climate neutrality.

In light of this discussion surrounding the “Prometheus” project, Weibel hopes to shift conversations towards a vision for supply and network development after 2050. By sparking a competition of ideas, he aims to move beyond debates and focus on practical solutions for a sustainable transport future. Benedikt Weibel continues to advocate for innovative approaches to address transportation sector challenges with decades of experience in rail industry.
