The Decline and Dismissal of Avisaíl García by the Miami Marlins: A Case Study in Free Agent Fiascos

The Miami Marlins parted ways with veteran outfielder Avisaíl García on Tuesday by designating him for assignment. Despite signing a four-year, $53 million free agent deal before the 2022 season, García failed to meet expectations during his two seasons with the Marlins.

In his first season with the Marlins, García played just 98 games due to injuries and hit .224 with eight home runs and 35 RBI. Last season, his production declined further as he appeared in only 37 games and hit three homers. This season, García played in 18 games before encountering another setback with a left hamstring strain.

Despite his struggles, Marlins manager Skip Schumaker praised García as a good teammate. However, García was a target of jeers from fans during the club’s opening homestand this season. Prior to joining the Marlins, García had a successful season with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2021, hitting 29 home runs and driving in 86 runs, both career highs.

The contract that Garcia signed includes a buyout in excess of $5 million for 2026 even though the Marlins are obligated to pay him for the rest of the season and $12 million in 2025. Schumaker acknowledged Garcia’s contributions to the game, noting that he made the AL All-Star team in 2017 during his time with the Chicago White Sox.
