The Dawn of a New Era in Healthcare: Harnessing the Power of Artificial Intelligence

Insights from Global Health Experts

Artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to revolutionize the healthcare industry by improving health outcomes, patient safety, and the accessibility and affordability of high-quality care. However, current efforts are falling short of achieving this transformative future. One of the major obstacles is the lack of standardized and accessible health data necessary for training, testing, using, and monitoring AI tools. Additionally, there is concern about tracking the performance of AI tools as they are deployed in different settings with diverse populations over time as health data evolves.

To address these challenges, The Future of Health (FOH), an international community of senior healthcare leaders, partnered with the Duke-Margolis Institute for Health Policy to explore potential solutions. Through a literature review, expert convening, and consensus-building exercise, FOH members identified four priority action areas that healthcare organizations and policymakers globally should implement to fully leverage the potential of AI in healthcare delivery. These action areas include improving data quality to support AI applications
