The Dark Side of Parental Pressure: How Mental Abuse due to Weight Issues Can Harm Children’s Physical and Mental Well-Being

Children suffer from depression after being called ‘fat’

Han, a 12-year-old girl, was scolded by her mother for eating in the middle of the night and was told that she was as fat as a pig. This caused her to burst into tears as she already felt guilty for her weight of nearly 60 kg. Her friends also added the word “fat” to her name, further contributing to her negative feelings. Seeing her daughter struggling with her weight and food intake, the mother took drastic measures by scheduling rigorous exercise sessions and limiting Han’s food to only healthy options.

After two months of strict dieting and exercise, Han began to feel hungry, tired, and lethargic. She started sneaking snacks and became less talkative and tense around her family. Concerned about her weight, the mother scolded Han for stealing money to buy fried chicken, further damaging her daughter’s self-esteem. Upon visiting a doctor, Han was diagnosed with stage 3 obesity, highlighting the impact of her mental health on her physical well-being. The doctor recommended psychological evaluation along with lifestyle changes for Han.

Similarly, another case of mental abuse due to weight issues was seen in a 10-year-old girl named Hang. Teased by her friends and criticized by her family for being overweight
