The Da Vinci Science Center: A New Beacon of Education and Tourism in Allentown

Da Vinci Science Center now open, aims to draw over 400,000 visitors each year

Allentown Mayor Matt Tuerk was ecstatic as he welcomed visitors to the newly opened Da Vinci Science Center in downtown Allentown. The $75 million science center is a significant investment in the city, not just for the education of young people but also as a major attraction to draw more people downtown.

Executive Director Lin Erickson announced at the grand opening that the science center is expected to attract around 400,000 visitors annually and generate $33 million in revenue for the region. The recent relocation from Cedar Crest College campus has put the Da Vinci Science Center in a prime location to spark a new wave of redevelopment in Allentown, similar to what happened with the opening of the PPL Center a decade ago.

Numerous developments are already underway near the new center on Hamilton Street, including apartments, restaurants, and commercial space in former PPL Tower and PPL Plaza buildings. Future attractions like Archer Music Hall will further enhance the tourism draw of the area. Despite being seen as a field trip destination for schools, Erickson emphasized that the world-class science center will appeal to families and adult tourists from all over the region.

In collaboration with Discover Lehigh Valley, the center aims to increase visitor stays in the area by encouraging them to explore other local attractions, restaurants, hotels, and businesses.
