98-Year-Old Ukrainian Woman Walks 10 Kilometers in Slippers and Walking Stick to Flee Russian Forces

Lidia Stepanivna Lomikovska, a 98-year-old woman from Ukraine, bravely made the decision to flee her village in eastern Ukraine due to escalating conflict in Ocheretyne. Despite being bombarded with drones and bombs by Russian forces, she embarked on a nearly ten-kilometer journey on foot, wearing only slippers and leaning on a walking stick for support. After two years of enduring the horrors of war, Lomikovska’s courageous journey was driven by the need for safety and security.

Unfortunately, during her departure, Lomikovska became separated from her loved ones who chose to take smaller field roads while she remained on the main path. However, this setback did not deter her from continuing her journey with unwavering determination. She fell multiple times and suffered sleep deprivation but pressed on with courage and resilience.

It was only until she was discovered by Ukrainian soldiers trekking along a road at night that Lomikovska’s journey to safety took a turn for the better. She was then handed over to the White Angels, a police force responsible for evacuating civilians trapped in conflict zones. Ultimately, she was reunited with her family members in a shelter.

Reflecting on her harrowing experience, Lomikovska compared the current war in Ukraine to her survival of World War II, noting the devastating impact of the ongoing conflict on her homeland. Despite these struggles, hope emerged for the elderly woman as Monobank promised to provide her with a home where she can live out her remaining years in peace and security.

Lidia Stepanivna Lomikovska’s bravery and resilience are truly inspiring stories of strength and determination that highlight how people cope during difficult times. Her story serves as a reminder of how essential it is for governments and organizations worldwide to work towards peace and stability so that innocent people like Lomikovska can live their lives without fear or danger.
