The Controversial Rollout of Weapon Detecting Technology in New York’s Transit System: Balancing Safety with Privacy and Civil Liberties

Discussing the latest weapon detection technology in the city

On Wednesday, Mayor Eric Adams unveiled plans to implement new weapon detecting technology in the city’s transit system. The administration hopes to enhance the safety of New Yorkers by introducing this technology at several stations within the next 90 days. However, concerns have been raised by advocates regarding the vendor behind the technology. They argue that the machines may not be accurate and point to past issues such as a class-action lawsuit and a federal probe.

To provide more insight into this pilot program, Albert Fox Cahn, executive director and founder of the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project, appeared on “Inside City Hall” with NY1 political reporter Bobby Cuza. Cahn highlighted some of the concerns surrounding the technology and its potential impact on privacy and civil liberties. It is clear that there are differing opinions on this new initiative, and further discussions will be needed to address these concerns and ensure that the technology is used in a responsible manner.
