Top Detroit High School Teams Honored at Sports Awards

The 2024 Detroit High School Sports Awards recognized Novi Detroit Catholic Central wrestling and Rochester Adams golf as the Boys and Girls Teams of the Year, respectively. The event, presented by Detroit Area Honda Dealers in partnership with the U.S. Army and sponsored by USA TODAY Sports, took place at The Fillmore and honored over 300 student-athletes from the Detroit Metro area and surrounding counties.

Novi Detroit Catholic Central wrestling has become a force to be reckoned with in high school sports, winning its 17th state championship this year under coach Mitch Hancock. With a perfect 50-0 season record, the team captured national attention, ranking as high as number 22 in the country by FloWrestling. Darius Marines was named Wrestler of the Year, securing his fourth individual crown at the state tournament where the team won five events.

Rochester Adams golf had an exceptional year on the course, continuing their reign as a powerhouse in girls golf in Michigan. Achieving 12 top-five finishes and maintaining a perfect record in Oakland Activities Association Red duel matches, they have gone undefeated at 25-0 over the past five years. Winning their fifth OAA Red League title, they also clinched their fourth consecutive regional title and secured back-to-back state championships by beating runner-up Brighton. To top it all off, all five seniors were recognized as Academic All-State team members, showcasing their excellence both on and off the course.
