The Battle Over Late Night Liquor Sales: Will City Council Approve ‘Stop and Gos’ Ban or Exempt Restaurants?

Potential Expansion of Business Curfews in Philadelphia

Cindy Bass has been advocating against “stop and gos” for years, businesses that sell a limited selection of alcohol, single cigarettes, and other items late at night. She has particularly criticized liquor licensees who set up tables just for appearances and offer minimal food options to meet state regulations for restaurants and bars.

Driscoll, on the other hand, believes that businesses holding a food establishment or restaurant liquor license should be exempt from the bill. He hopes that this will be a temporary measure to prevent nuisance businesses from operating late at night. Driscoll is optimistic that this tool will help to control certain problematic areas, but he does not want it to become a city-wide regulation. He believes that once the situation is under control, these restrictions can be reversed.

The expanded curfew will soon go through council committee hearings and receive a full vote from the council before being sent to the mayor for review. This process will allow for further discussion and consideration of the potential impacts of the new regulations.
