Texas Department of Information Resources and Austin Community College Partner to Launch Cybersecurity Apprenticeship Program for Students

ACC is thrilled to announce the launch of a new state agency pilot program for technology apprenticeships

The Texas Department of Information Resources (DIR) and Austin Community College (ACC) have partnered to launch a technology and cybersecurity apprenticeship program for students. This initiative aims to provide hands-on career skills while pursuing an education. Over the past year, ACC has seen over 100 students complete apprenticeships in various fields, including health sciences and manufacturing.

The partnership is aligned with House Bill 584, which took effect on Sep. 1, 2023, allowing state information departments to collaborate with public junior colleges or technical institutes to address shortages in information resources within the state.

Texas Rep. Donna Howard views this partnership as beneficial for both ACC students and the state departments involved. She believes that apprenticeships and credentials can lead to positions in IT cybersecurity even without a four-year degree, providing opportunities for those with experience and knowledge to protect information resources.

The Department of Information Resources will serve as the employer for the initial pilot program, with ACC planning to use this model for future program partnerships with businesses and industries. The next partnership program on the horizon for ACC is with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
