A Coconut Creek teacher was arrested for assaulting a student who made a joke using the teacher’s name. Christopher Cagle, a 64-year-old science teacher at Monarch High School, faced charges of child abuse without great bodily harm, a third-degree felony.
The incident took place when the student joked with Cagle by calling him “Cagle Bagel” as he walked past his classroom. Despite the student believing it was an innocent comment because his friends also used the nickname, Cagle became enraged and demanded that the student come towards him. During the confrontation, Cagle twisted the student’s hand behind his back, causing him to feel lightheaded and resulting in red scratch marks on his back and neck.
Security footage showed Cagle dragging the student into the classroom, leading to his arrest during school hours. Although he remained silent after being taken into custody, the child’s parents expressed their desire to see justice served against the teacher.
Broward County Public Schools issued a statement reiterating their commitment to ensuring student safety and their cooperation with district investigators and law enforcement officials in addressing this matter. As a result of these actions, Cagle has been reassigned away from Monarch High School pending the outcome of legal proceedings.
