Tackling Climate Change and Improving Health: A Unique Opportunity at the High-Level Political Forum

The Case for Climate Action on Health Grounds

In 2024, the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) will host the event “The Health Argument for Climate Action”. This unique occasion aims to review SDG Goal 13, which emphasizes taking urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. The event will also highlight the critical connection between health and climate change, as well as the positive impact that can result from addressing climate concerns on health issues.

During this event, the World Health Organization (WHO), Member States, and the health community will present solutions for building climate-resilient and sustainable low-carbon healthcare systems. One of the key initiatives highlighted will be the Alliance for Transformative Action for Climate and Health (ATACH). The event will also showcase cross-sectional solutions in three critical areas: clean energy, healthy and sustainable food systems, and healthy urban planning.

This conference is hosted by WHO in collaboration with the United Arab Emirates, UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), and The Rockefeller Foundation. It will take place in a hybrid format, both online and in-person at the UN Headquarters in New York. Its primary goal is to raise awareness about the vital link between health and climate change while demonstrating innovative solutions that are currently being implemented to tackle these challenges.
