Swiss Health Insurance Market: Gaining and Losing Customers Amidst Premium Hikes

Numerous policyholders are prepared for a shift

In the Swiss health insurance market, several companies have recently gained and lost customers. Concordia, Groupe Mutuel, and Sanitas have experienced the most significant growth, while Assura has suffered the most significant loss. Premium increases have put pressure on insurance companies to retain customers, with 44 percent of insured individuals planning to compare premiums and benefits in the future.

A study by Deloitte predicts that approximately 12 percent of customers will switch providers by 2024, while 18 percent will stay with their provider but adjust their deductible or insurance model. Among the twelve largest health insurance companies in Switzerland, Concordia has gained 71,000 net customers in basic insurance, with Groupe Mutuel, Sanitas, and CSS also seeing significant increases. Assura suffered a loss of 115,000 insured individuals.

To retain customers amidst premium hikes, insurance companies are offering competitive premiums and supplementary insurance options. KPT from Bern and CSS from Lucerne have seen growth in recent years by focusing on these strategies. Groupe Mutuel has reversed a trend of customer loss by implementing these tactics. Concordia and Sanitas have also gained new customers due to stable premiums and good financial positioning.

Helsana has stabilized its customer base after recording losses in the previous year by offering competitive premiums and good financial positioning. Swica suffered departures but remained strong in the supplementary insurance market. Smaller health insurance companies offer potential for customers looking for low premiums but may face challenges with solvency ratios and resources in the long term.

Overall, the Swiss health insurance market is constantly evolving as companies adapt to changing customer preferences and industry trends. It’s important for insurers to stay competitive by offering attractive pricing plans and diverse product options to attract new customers while retaining existing ones.
