Swiss Electric Car Market Shifts Towards Chinese Manufacturers: Challenges and Opportunities Ahead

Chinese models to arrive in Switzerland soon

The Swiss market is experiencing a shift towards electromobility, with the entry of the first Chinese electric car manufacturers. Despite initial challenges such as high prices, low ranges, and a patchy charging network, the adoption of electric vehicles is slowly gaining momentum in Switzerland. By 2023, around one in five newly registered cars in Switzerland were purely electric. At the end of April 2024, there were 183,262 purely electric cars on Swiss roads, accounting for just under 4 percent of the passenger car fleet. American manufacturer Tesla currently dominates the Swiss electric car market, with the Tesla Model Y being the best-selling car in Switzerland in 2023.

However, the electric car market is experiencing a downturn, with new registrations stalling in spring 2024. Factors such as the abolition of import tax exemptions for electric cars, rising electricity prices, and concerns about electricity supply are impacting sales. Despite these challenges, Switzerland has a well-developed public charging network with over 16,000 charging points, including fast-charging stations.

To continue the growth of electrification in Switzerland, more affordable entry-level electric car models are needed. While established brands like Tesla offer higher-priced options, Chinese manufacturers like Nio, MG, BYD, and Dongfeng are introducing attractive electric car models with longer ranges at competitive prices. These Chinese brands have gained popularity globally and are expected to enter Switzerland’s market even more in coming years.

While potential tariffs on Chinese imports may further impact the market’s evolution and consumer choices should consider factors such as safety features and emergency systems before making a purchase decision. Consumers should also conduct thorough research on warranty coverage and charging time when considering buying a Chinese electric car model to ensure it meets their needs and expectations before making a purchase decision.
