Investigating the Food Source: Linking nearly 500 cases of food poisoning in Vietnam to tainted bread

The authorities swiftly identified the source of contaminated food in order to determine the cause of poisoning almost 500 individuals and provide appropriate treatment. Mr. Nguyen Hung Long, Deputy Director of the Food Safety Department at the Ministry of Health, made this proposal during discussions with Dong Nai authorities and Long Khanh city leaders on May 3. He and a team of experts from the Ministry of Health are investigating the medical treatment and examining the cause of the poisoning outbreak linked to bread consumption.

During an investigation, it was discovered that a bread store owner sourced ingredients from various suppliers, preparing homemade items like pate, pickles, and sauces at their facility. Authorities identified and sealed potentially contaminated products at the store, initiating further tests to determine the cause of the poisoning outbreak. Mr. Long emphasized the need for enhanced supervision of food processing establishments to prevent similar incidents in the future and ensure public health and safety.

The Department of Health in Dong Nai reported that 487 people were hospitalized by 5:00 p.m. on the day of the incident, displaying symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, and fever after consuming bread from a specific store. The outbreak led to intestinal infections, with several cases requiring critical care and specialized treatment, including dialysis and mechanical ventilation for pediatric patients.

With support from experts from various medical facilities including Ho Chi Minh City Children’s Hospital 1, efforts are underway to treat affected individuals and prevent further complications. The Ministry of Health emphasizes quick communication strategies to alert anyone who consumed contaminated bread to seek medical attention if they experience unusual symptoms.

Dong Nai Police representatives confirmed that they are collaborating with relevant parties to investigate the incident and taking necessary samples for analysis. If criminal elements are identified, legal proceedings will be initiated.
